Vertigo Pop Tokyo 3, page 14


Another elegant splash page. Maki shows Hike her friends.

This could have been routine, but Seth chose to treat this picnic scene as a subject reminescent of some of the Old Masters, both European and Japanese and here, and here. Maki standing at the front of the page gesturing to Hike looks almost like a museum docent showing a valuable painting to an awestruck visitor.
Like its counterparts in both European and Japanese art, the women (in this case young girls) in the scene are dressed according to high fashion. They have removed their shoes and are sitting on a cloth drinking tea and eating snacks. The formality of the scene seems very Japanese, yet it is pop culture through and through.
