Ff/Iron Man: Big in Japan 4 page 14

Back to Big in Japan.

Another schematic drawing, this time a closer look at the structure under the earth that is
Mole man's lair, and also evidently an ancient temple. This is a splash page: the whole page is taken up in showing the structure. But there is also progression of the story, which Seth shows in a series of six insets, close-ups of the characters talking (or in Mole man's case, raging) about what they are going to do with the knowledge they have uncovered. Seth has used the repair manual-type of schematic view brilliantly here. He not only shows the architecture of the underground rooms, but he has cut away part of one wall to show what Johnny is doing, and another wall to introduce the image of some large underground creatures that will come up (literally) on the next page.
A simple, clear image of a text that is anything but simple and clear.

Brilliance. Very few can even come close to pulling this off, let alone thinking of it.
