These are two illustrations that Seth did for a story called "The Red Scarf" printed in Cicada magazine (Jan/Feb 2005). Cicada is one of the magazines under the publishing umbrella of Carus Publications, which puts out Cricket, and other literary magazines for children of all ages. Cicada is for the oldest youthful readers, approximately high school age. Seth had a relationship with the magazine for several years, beginning when he subscribed to Cricket himself, from about ages 7 to 9. He won an honorable mention from Cricket for a drawing he did when he was 9 or so. That gave him a permanent love for the magazine, I think, and so he was thrilled to be able to illustrate for them, even though the art director there gave him much less freedom in his drawing than comic book publishers did. But like most of the people he worked with, Cricket's art director loved Seth, and let him draw what he drew best. It was a relationship that was both fruitful and pleasurable for all sides.

I love the snowman image. The snow is particularly well observed, I think (the foot prints, the way it crumbles). Lovely drawing.
As much as I enjoy comics it's a real treat to see how much Seth branched out from them.
Though his early goal was to draw comic books, as time went on he thought that he would draw them for a while and then go on to other things. He had so many ideas in his mind--movies, other sorts of stories, maybe art forms that hadn't been tried yet. He always wanted to branch out into unknown territory.
Thanks for the insight Vicki, undoubtedly Seth had the mind of a true artist. A rare, rare thing.
