In the notes that he wrote to his editors (reprinted at then end of the trade paperback version of this story), Seth said that this was his favorite page in the book.
In a series of rather acrobatic movements, the Apocalypse Beast turns himself--or is turned--inside out, and the tongue that was the most prominent of his many wierd characteristics becomes the whole creature. He seems to be horrified to be sprung into outer space.
This whole idea was probably Seth's. His notes are full of ideas for stories that put people in odd situations, or juxtapose things and ideas in wierd ways. The idea of a monster that turns itself inside out and sprints out of the stratosphere into the universe beyond was just his style.
