Batman SNOW 193 page 11

Tip 22: Drawing your reader into the page by focusing on him

This is a technique used by artists of the Renaissance, and other times also. There is a memorable painting by Raphael and another by Fra Filippo Lippi in which some rather charming angels in the foreground look out toward the viewer, drawing him/her into the picture (although in the Raphael the angels are not really looking at us, but rather they seem to be viewers like us, commenting on the primary figures in the painting). Seth uses this occasionally very elegantly, as in this page, where several of the characters--but especially the woman at the lower left--look out at us, and bring us into the action.
