Willworld page 15

I just took a photograph of this page yesterday, and so I thought I'd post it. It is one of my favorite pages from Willworld, which is probably my favorite book of Seth's.
Starting at the top, Hal is being given a tour of the hotel where he is going to sleep, with as his tour guides, a grey, noseless person named Mu Fon and a six-armed woman named Kelly. Hal sees everyone different: some human, some squidlike, large and small. Mu Fon and Kelly see everyone as looking like themselves. In those three upper panels, we see the world from the point of view of first Hal, then Kelly, then Mu Fon.
The great pleasure of this page, however, is the hotel, where the horizon is horizontal, then vertical, then horizontal again, a la MC Escher, whose work Seth had admired since he first saw it. The large lower panel also has exquisite perspective, looking down a sort of central atrium with the hotel rooms opening out onto it in various different ways. Seth drew our characters in several places in the same picture, showing their progress first one way and then the next.

Great page indeed! Seth is very Escher-esque - I guess it was his interest in maths and the technical side of things, and not just the surreal aspect of Escher's work. I think I love Willworld best as well.

Totally Escher! Mindnumbing work!
